5.2 The doctrine of Original Sin
The first reference to the designation ‘Original Sin’ dates back to approximately 1225 and is based on the Latin expression ‘peccatum originale’ (which literally means ‘original sin’ or ‘primal sin’). Its meaning incorporated both the sin of Adam and Eve—a consequence of their fall into sin—and the hereditary sin of all mankind in general which came into being as a result.
In the following we will present the most important biblical statements on the sinfulness of man. Thereafter we will briefly explore the history of the doctrine of Original Sin. After that we will explain the new Apostolic Church’s understanding of Original Sin.
